BUDDING rock musicians got a taste of the world of pop music during a workshop at a Durham school yesterday.

The opportunity for students at Belmont School Community Arts College came through a visit by former County Durham teacher Andrew Meadowcroft, who brought his School of Rock and Pop to Belmont's recording studios.

Fourteen students from years seven, eight and nine took part in the lively sessions, which covered aspects of modern music from playing and writing to recording.

The school already boasts a number of talented musicians, including guitarists and drummers, and the workshop gave them an opportunity to polish their performances.

It was in September of last year that Belmont opened its performing arts block, including a recording studio.

Yesterday, head of performing arts at the school Jane Cooper said: "The workshops for rock and pop afforded the students a chance to try different styles of music.''

There will be another rock and pop workshop, open to any interested youngsters, during the half-term period.

It will be staged at Belmont School on May 25 and 26 and any young person interested in taking can register their interest by calling 0845 2340195.
