TEENAGERS are to be given the chance to work alongside professional firefighters in a project aimed at reducing arson.

The Young Firefighters scheme is open to any 13 to 17-year-olds in the Seaham area.

The County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service will be running the scheme at the town's fire station.

The project aims to integrate young people from different social backgrounds, as well as reduce arson and anti-social behaviour in Seaham.

If it is successful, the scheme will be established at all fire stations across County Durham and Darlington.

Steve Wharton, the fire service's assistant director manager for Easington, said: "It is all about giving the young people worth, and showing them they have a potential far higher than they realise.

"We want to show them that by putting their energies into positive things for the community, rather than negative ones, they can enjoy doing things with a positive impact."

The youngsters will meet weekly and be shown the same skills as professional firefighters.

The project is aimed not just at those who want to enter the fire service as a career, but as a means of developing a whole range of valuable skills. These include teamwork, self-confidence and life skills for those taking part.

The scheme will be offering a Btec qualification at is culmination.
