VOLUNTEERS have spruced up a Teesside cemetery.
The Friends of Spion Kop Cemetery, in Hartlepool, staged a litter-pick and general tidy-up to coincide with Spring Clean Hartlepool, an initiative that began last month and runs until the end of this month.
The aim is to encourage people to organise small-scale environmental improvement projects, and help make the town a cleaner and more attractive place.
The friends group has about 20 members who have transformed the site - a rare dune grassland overlooking the North Sea - into the town's sixth Local Nature Reserve.
Chairwoman Liz Torley said: "I would encourage people to follow our example. There is a lot of satisfaction to be gained from working to transform and protect important natural assets such as Spion Kop Cemetery."
Keeley Metcalfe, Hartlepool Borough Council's community environmental action officer, said: "The friends have already put a lot of effort into the Spion Kop Cemetery project, and they continue to work hard to further develop and care for the site. They deserve to be congratulated on their efforts
"I hope that people elsewhere in the town will follow their lead."
