BUSINESSES across the region are being urged to enter a competition that acknowledges water efficiency.
Backed by a range of organisations, including the Environment Agency (EA) and Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the awards reward companies showing innovation in reducing wastage.
According to the EA, businesses nationally use 14,000 million litres of water a day but could save at least 30 per cent through simple measures.
Now in their fifth year, the Water Efficiency awards are open to organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors.
Dr David King, director of water management for competition organisers the EA, said that fears of a forthcoming drought in parts of the UK meant it was crucial that companies acted now.
He said: "We all have a part to play in saving water, including businesses. Now's the time for businesses to show customers how aware of the environment they are and save money at the same time.
"Water-efficient features in buildings, such as dual flush toilets, smart technology in manufacturing and staff training in water efficiency, can improve water management and reduce costs.
"Our Water Efficiency Awards provide organisations with the opportunity to showcase the excellent work that is being done across the country in saving our water resources."
The awards run every two years and are backed by waste advice organisation Envirowise, the Countryside Agency, the Water Services Regulatory Authority and the National Farmers' Union.
The closing date for entering one of the seven categories is August 31. For more information, visit the Environment Agency website or call (01903) 832073.
Projects must have been completed or have been operational between September 2004 and March this year.
Dr King said: "Our use of water in all aspects of our lives has a direct impact on the rivers and wetlands of England and Wales.
"We all need to do our bit to make the water we use go further for the long-term protection of the environment and our water supplies. We cannot expect our environment to provide a constantly increasing supply of water.
"Businesses taking part in these awards can show customers how seriously they take the environment, by making responsible choices about one of our most precious natural resources."
