TOWN councillors at Kirkbymoorside want residents to give their views on the future of the Manor Vale site.
The North Yorkshire County Council's highways depot on the site is to be put on the market and redeveloped.
But at the annual town assembly, Mayor Nigel Richardson said: "Are we going to let some rich developer get their hands on it, or are we going to put up a fight?"
He said both the town council and the Kirkbymoorside Reinaissance Market Town Group, Our Future Team, wanted to hear the public's re-action because of the importance of the site.
Councillor Richardson said the council was concerned about Manor Vale and was keen to get opinions.
