MORE than 150 examples of a breed once threatened by extinction were on show at the weekend.
The Dales Pony Society Spring Stallion and Breed Show took place at Streatlam Farm, near Barnard Castle on Saturday.
Freda Longstaff, who is a member of the society's council, said: "There was a great turnout. There were a lot of spectators and ponies, and a good deal of local ponies.
"Years ago, the ponies would be used in the lead mines as pack horses and, at one time, they very nearly became extinct.
"They are still classed as a rare breed but they are becoming more and more popular. A few spectators were there looking to buy ponies and there is a lot of interest in the breed.
"They are very placid, very sure-footed and easy to deal with on the whole."
The overall champion was Stricklands Jim, a 13-year-old stallion, which was bred and exhibited by D Urwin, from Tudhoe Colliery.
Reserve champion was Westwick Heather, a four-year-old mare bred and exhibited by D and A Eccles, from Middleton-in-Teesdale.
