A VOLUNTEER agency has celebrated its fifth birthday with a drive to become more self- sufficient.
The 2D group, which provides support for volunteers in Teesdale and Wear Valley, has unveiled a revamped conference room and a website to help local not-for-profit organisations.
The group hopes that hiring out the conference room may make it less reliant on grants.
The updated conference room, which is available for local volunteer groups to use, includes an interactive white board, laptop, projector, Internet access and new furniture.
It was unveiled at a birthday party for the group yesterday.
Michele Armstrong, chief officer for 2D, said: "Instead of relying on grants, we're trying to become a bit more entrepreneurial by hiring out the conference centre.
"Today has been about celebrating what we've done over the past five years, letting people see the different projects we do and encouraging people to check out our website."
Wear Valley District Councillor Eddie Murphy and Durham county councillors Brian Myers and Bob Pendlebury joined representatives from other groups to look around the new facilities and view the 2D website, which was launched yesterday.
Councillor Myers, who is also president of 2D, said: "The new room looks good and it's great that organisations can hire it out.
"The changes not only make the room more comfortable but have also improved the accessibility."
A discounted rate is available to 2D members wishing to hire the room, but any organisation can make use of the facilities, which have ample parking and can provide refreshments and buffet lunches.
The website includes advice and information for those involved in local groups, as well as having online membership forms so that people can join 2D.
The group was originally called the Wear Valley Volunteer Development Agency before becoming 2D in 2001 and expanding its services.
They represent the volunteer sector at county council, district council and local strategic partnership level, as well as providing advice and support to volunteer groups.
The conference centre is at Unit 4, Crook Business Centre, New Road, Crook and can be booked by calling Ann Cairns on (01388) 762220.
