DETAILS of a £325m scheme to upgrade 25 miles of the A1 have been unveiled.
In a three-year project starting in 2008, a stretch of the motorway from Dishforth to Barton, in North Yorkshire, will be widened to three lanes, and junctions built at Baldersby, Leeming, Catterick and Scotch Corner.
The preferred route for the upgraded road was made public yesterday. The Highways Agency has made changes to its original plans, following a public consultation last June.
The main changes are at Street Lane, near Pickhill, where a bridge over the motorway will be built, and at Brompton South bridge, which will stay open to all users.
The consultation also approved a revision to the preferred route south of Catterick, where it is diverted to the west to minimise impact on a scheduled ancient monument site at Bainesse Farm.
Access roads will be provided for local and non-motorway traffic from Baldersby Junction to Leeming Junction, Low Street to Catterick Central Junction and from Catterick North to Scotch Corner.
Details of the scheme are on show to the public at Leeming Bar Services from 10am to 8pm next Friday and from 10am to 4pm on the Saturday. They will also be displayed at the Scotch Corner Hotel from 10am to 8pm on May 26 and from 10am to 4pm on May 27.
