BISHOP Auckland MP Helen Goodman has spoken up for the region's manufacturing businesses and workforce in a Commons debate on the Budget.
Ms Goodman said she believes the Government needs to invest in the skills of local people, free businesses from red tape and improve transport links.
She also hailed the increase in funding for schools as she joined other MPs in discussing the Budget.
She said: "The 50 per cent rise in schools investment announced will make a huge difference to the workforce of the future.
"It means, for example, a completely new school in Byers Green, where teachers and pupils are currently struggling with a building built in 1915. The extra money for science teachers and science clubs will be welcome in the Glaxo plant in Barnard Castle and in local schools.
"The grants for Further Education for those aged up to 25 will also make a significant impact."
She also highlighted the benefits for pensioners of the free national bus pass scheme.
"Before the Budget, I met the Wear Valley Pensioners Association," she said.
"They wanted to see an extension nationwide of free bus passes. So I am sure they will welcome the £250m the Chancellor is providing for free nationwide bus travel."
