PUPILS have come up with the name for a multi-million pound development at a landmark site.
Housebuilder Shepherd Homes is transforming the site of the former Cock o' The North pub, on the outskirts of Durham City, in a £12m development of 17 homes and 25 apartments.
A competition was run for pupils at the nearby Durham High School for Girls to come up with a name for the development.
Seven-year-old Shanaya Atkinson-Jones won the top prize of £100 worth of WH Smith vouchers with the name Roundhaven at The Cock o' the North.
Over the coming weeks, Shanaya will be able to see her suggestion used on everything from advertising hoardings to brochures.
She said: "When I looked where it was, I saw that the houses would be built near a roundabout, and I thought it would be such a nice place that it would be like heaven to live there. I then put the two words together and made Roundhaven."
Gill Settle, headteacher of the school's junior house, said: "We are all delighted Shanaya's suggestion for the site name has been chosen.
"It will be a permanent reminder of her time here at Durham High School for Girls."
Julie Prendergast, Shepherd Homes' North-East regional sales manager, said: "We were delighted with the quality of the ideas we got from the girls at the school."
