APPRENTICES are flying the flag for the region after embarking on an environmental project in Germany.
A team of 12 from South-West Durham Training (SWDT), in Newton Aycliffe, are visiting the Siemens training facility, in Germany.
During their three-week stay in Mulheim - which is twinned with Darlington - they will gain an insight into European industry and culture, while working alongside German counterparts on an engineering project to design a hydraulic can crushing machine for use in recycling.
They will also visit the Opel car plant, in Bochum, watch a Borussia Dortmund football match and take part in Dragon boat races on the Ruhr.
In June, German students will visit the North-East to complete the project.
Bob Waller, chief executive at SWDT, said: "This is the third time we have staged this type of project and we anticipate it will be every bit as successful as the first two, which gave our apprentices an opportunity to sharpen their business acumen and forge strong links with their European counterparts."
