A POPULAR retired teacher has died at the age of 74.
Robert Edwin Burnside, known as Eddie, was a well-known figure throughout Teesside and east Cleveland.
Born in Philadelphia, County Durham, he was the second son of Alf and Margaret.
The family moved to Loftus in 1938, where Mr Burnside attended Guisborough Grammar School.
After completing his A-levels, he served his National Service with the RAF. Afterwards, he took up teacher training at Bede College, Durham, and secured his first teaching post at Eston County Modern School
He married his wife, Sheila Stephenson, in 1955.
He later taught at Loftus Secondary Modern, before moving to Warsett School, in Brotton, as head of mathematics, where he retired as senior master in 1989, and taught three generations of one family on several occasions.
After retirement, he remained a well-known figure in Saltburn where he lived until 2000, before moving to Railway Close, Sherburn, near Durham City.
He was a keen sportsman, playing football and cricket.
He leaves his wife, a son, Martin, and a granddaughter, Eleanor.
