FOOD business operators are being warned to maintain hygiene standards after the successful prosecution of a pizza shop.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's food team inspected Le Basil, in Eston High Street, and discovered dirty food rooms and dirty food equipment in June last year.
Owner Mousa Mousa pleaded guilty at Teesside Magistrates' Court to five offences under Food Safety Regulations and was fined £1,500 for each offence, a total of £7,500.
Mr Mousa, who no longer runs the business, explained his involvement in the premises was minimal, but had accepted this did not excuse his obligations as the owner.
The council's cabinet chairman, Councillor Eric Empson, said: "The latest case highlights the responsibility of food businesses to ensure their premises are kept clean and properly managed.
"The fines reflect the severity of these offences. We are determined to raise awareness of the need for good food hygiene standards and are looking to help educate businesses, particularly in relation to new food hygiene laws introduced in January."
In partnership with the other Tees Valley authorities and several training providers, a series of training events have been organised. So far, more than 130 caterers have signed up to take part.
