A COUPLE who met while they worked in a factory during the war have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
William and Lillian Spencer marked 60 years of marriage with family and friends yesterday at their home in Broadway South, Darlington.
They were from different parts of the town but met at the start of the Second World War while they were working at Darlington Forge.
They married on March 23, 1946. at St Paul's Church, North Road, and had a honeymoon in Edinburgh.
Mrs Spencer, 83, also worked as a conductor on the trolleybuses during the war before retiring when they got married.
Her 82-year-old husband went on to work at other factories, including Underground Mining Machinery, in Newton Aycliffe, where he was a chief inspector and quality manager.
They have two children, Graham, 58, and Lynne, 53, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mrs Spencer said: "We do a lot of the same things and we get along. It has been a lot of give and take and sharing things."
