COUNCIL tax benefit paid to pensioners in east Durham has doubled in the past two months.
An extra £11,000 has been handed out to those entitled to money, which now brings the total to £23,000 since the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and Easington District Council launched an initiative.
The two groups contacted people receiving pension Credit to assess if they were entitled to council tax benefit.
And thanks to the initiative, which has been running since November, a number of people in the district are now receiving an extra £20 a week.
