REQUESTS for the 14,000 free tickets for the Pet Shop Boys' performance of Battleship Potemkin at a North-East shipyard have exceeded demand.

Less than 48 hours after Pet Shop Boys announced that tickets for the event, on May 1, at Swan Hunters Shipyard, in Wallsend, North Tyneside, were available from NewcastleGateshead Initiative's website, the site had already received over 14,000 requests.

Demand for tickets has come from as far afield as Israel, the US and Germany, as well as thousands in the UK.

Organiser Newcastle-Gateshead Initiative is advising that those who have secured tickets will be informed by Monday, April 10.

Unsuccessful applicants should keep checking the www.visitnewcastle gateshead.com site for returned tickets.

The initiative creative director, Stella Hall, said: "We always knew that demand for this unique event would be extremely high, but we have been overwhelmed by how rapidly we were fully subscribed."

The Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant said: "The Tyneside venue is striking and will bring additional resonance to the performance, which I'm sure people will appreciate."

The Pet Shop Boys' gig is one of the highlights of the initiative's programme of festivals and events this year.
