A LAS Vegas-style supercasino could be coming to part of the region, creating more than 1,000 jobs.
If it goes ahead, the Tyneside development could attract £63m a year.
Newcastle City Council made the decision to apply for a licence on the understanding further consultation will be carried out.
The authority wants to be satisfied the scheme will bring the benefit of regeneration without having an adverse impact on the area.
The submission will be made to a Government- appointed panel this month.
Middlesbrough and Sunderland have both expressed an interest in securing supercasino rights. A decision is expected in May.
