THE Northern Echo scored success at a national awards ceremony yesterday when one of its journalists won a major accolade.
Joe Willis was judged to have written the Scoop of the Year at an awards ceremony held by Newsquest, the parent company of The Northern Echo and its sister paper, the Darlington and Stockton Times.
Mr Willis won the award with his exclusive story about Elaine Walker, from Redmire, North Yorkshire, who abandoned her 15-year-old daughter to set up home in Turkey with her holiday romance boyfriend.
The story, which Mr Willis broke last August, was followed up for weeks afterwards by media from across the world.
Mr Willis, 29, who is from Wensleydale, joined The Northern Echo in 2004 from The Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph. He is based at The Northern Echo's office, in King Street, Richmond.
