A HOUSING plan for a city centre's "green oasis" has sparked widespread opposition.
Campaigners against homes on the site say it is the only significant green site left in central Ripon.
The plans, for Sharow View, Allhallowgate, by Leeds Federated Housing Association Ltd, for two blocks of three affordable houses, has sparked a protest petition signed by almost 90 people.
Ripon City Council has tabled a seven-point objection and letters from residents are also opposing the scheme.
The development for the six homes, all with three bedrooms, will be discussed by members of Harrogate Borough Council's planning committee on Tuesday.
Planning officer Andy Hough is recommending refusal, saying development would mean loss of a substantial part of a former workhouse garden and an area of open space.
It would also impact on the setting of the listed building and character of the conservation area.
