A BID to create six football pitches on green belt land has been shown the red card by objectors.

Knaresborough Celtic Football Club wants to create the pitches on land used for farming, at Thistle Hill, Knaresborough.

The plan is being opposed by Follifoot with Plompton Parish Council and the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), and has drawn nine letters of objection from residents.

The football club wants to create a full-sized pitch, two youth pitches and three mini- pitches.

It also want to build a single-storey pavilion with four changing rooms and include a refreshment area and equipment store, as well as 50 parking spaces.

The parish council fears more traffic could lead to an increase in accidents and believes the project could be inadequate for players and supporters.

Linda Potter, chairman of the CPRE, said the group's main objection was to a "very large" pavilion within the green belt, plus two car parks.

Planning officer Neville Watson is recommending the application should be refused when Harrogate Borough Council Planning Committee meets to discuss the issue on Tuesday.
