NINE young students have been excelling in courses, of the mouth-watering kind.
The youngsters, pupils at the King's Academy, in Coulby Newham, near Middlesbrough, are benefiting from a scheme that allows them to swap their classrooms for the kitchens at Middlesbrough College one day a week.
Their culinary achievements have so impressed customers, staff and guests using the college's bistro, that the nine have been rewarded with a vocational team award in the Middlesbrough Aimhigher school awards.
As well as a shield and group certificate, each of the King's students - Christopher Malyan, Levi Dunmore, Leah Bell, Melissa Beard, Danielle Stabon, Fahadia Shahid, Shamayalah Shan, Charlotte Watt and Cheryl McCluskey - have received individual certificates and £20 worth of vouchers.
Andy Lister, assistant principal at King's Academy, said: "The students have thoroughly enjoyed their courses so far and, with the support of their tutor Simon Lovell, have risen to the challenge and shown what they are capable of.
"It's been a great opportunity for them, allowing them to experience a college environment and to learn and master new skills. Once they complete this year's course, they will have a thorough grounding in the basics of catering.
"They have received some very good feedback from customers and have been fantastic ambassadors for the academy."
Last year, the students, some of whom have special needs including hearing impairments and learning difficulties, completed their NVQ Level 1 in food service.
