WORK on a major package of improvements to a North Yorkshire swimming pool is expected to start next year.
A scheme to bring Thirsk Pool in line with Hambleton's three other leisure centres has been placed in next year's capital programme by the local cabinet.
Hambleton District Council cabinet member for health, Councillor Neville Huxtable, said the need to improve the facility was long overdue and that without the scheme a large number of potential customers could be lost.
He said: "Without the improvements, we are in danger of being unable to attract a huge untapped market of potential local customers."
Currently people using the dry side facilities - the gym - have to go into the wetside - the pool area - for changing facilities.
The scheme will create dry side changing, toilet and shower facilities, together with a studio and multi- use room, with an aim of creating a more rounded facility to complement the existing pool and Zest Fitness Centre.
Coun Huxtable said: "Through this improvement programme, we can bring Thirsk Pool in line with all our leisure centres and give the town the centre it wants and deserves."
The cabinet allocated £110,000 for the scheme and a further £200,000 from external sources has already been secured.
Coun Huxtable added: "We will be exploring a range of schemes to see just what we can get for our money - as well as looking for potential partnership money to top up the pot.
"We will tailor the scheme to the amount of cash available."
