A Darlington woman celebrated her 104th birthday on Saturday.
Dorothy Hoyland was born in Penistone, South Yorkshire, in 1902, and came to the area in the wake of the Second World War, moving to Barton in 1946 to work as a housekeeper for Martin and Mary Hall.
In 1990, Mrs Hoyland, with Mr and Mrs Hall, moved to Stanton Hall Care Home, Trinity Road, Darlington.
Although Mr and Mrs Hall have since died, their son, Edward, joined friends and relatives at Stanton Hall Care Home, in Trinity Road, Darlington, to celebrate Miss Hoyland's birthday.
He regularly visits Miss Hoyland and is like a son to her, said niece Jane Muncaster.
Miss Hoyland has always been a keen traveller - having climbed mountains in Peru, gone white water rafting in Canada and visited both the Arctic and Antarctic.
Mrs Muncaster said: "Her travelling amazes me because she is such a sweet lovely soul. She is an amazing lady."
Miss Hoyland is also a keen nature lover and enjoys singing. She was one of 11 siblings - six girls and five boys.
