PRIMARY schoolchildren regularly using the toilet during lesson times are being given a yellow card as part of a sanction system.
Children at Alderman Leach Primary School, in Darlington, are being encouraged to go during lunchtime or breaks.
The measures have been introduced to prevent children regularly interrupting lessons.
Letters have been sent home to some pupils to reinforce the message to those regularly breaking the rule.
The letter said: "Children are not allowed to go to the toilet during lesson times unless they have a note from their parents.
"If they do need to leave the classroom, then they are given a yellow card, which is part of the sanction system of the school."
Children needing to use the toilet more regularly are asked to inform the school in writing.
One parent, Angela Wilson, said: "You cannot chastise someone for wanting to use the toilet.
"You shouldn't be told in front of the class you cannot go. It is absolutely ridiculous."
A Darlington Borough Council spokesman said: "Younger pupils are free to go to the toilet at any time, but the school does ask older children to go at break-time or lunchtime wherever possible.
"However, if it is just a one-off during lessons there is no problem and, of course, if a pupil has a medical condition and a letter has been given to the school, that is also fine.
"Parents are welcome to speak to the school if they would like further clarification."
