A HAPPY couple gave thanks to their work in the health service yesterday as they celebrated 50 years of marriage.
Eric and Jean Burden looked back on the jobs that brought them together, as they and their family marked their golden wedding at their home in Gainford, near Barnard Castle.
He was an ambulance driver who regularly took patients to the hospital in Stockton, where she was a telephone switchboard operator - and soon after setting eyes on each other they started courting.
"We are really thankful that we had these jobs, because otherwise we would never have seen each other and had such a wonderful 50 years," said Mr Burden, who later worked as a gardener.
Their family of a son, three daughters, 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren gave them a gift of a luxury swinging seat for their garden to help them enjoy the lawns and flower beds they have created.
