KEEN walker Tom McMahon will be going on a rambling holiday on the Indian Ocean islands of Mauritius and Reunion for only £60, while his wife has to pay £1,600.
Mr McMahon, 63, a retired civil servant, of Langley Park, won the bargain 16-day break in a draw run by Ramblers Holidays to celebrate its 60th anniversary.
He said: "I have never won anything before and I am delighted.
"The funny thing is my wife booked the holiday, but put my name first so I get to go for £60, and she has to pay more than £1,600.
"It is quite a flash holiday and we had been saving up for it. It was going to be our big break, so we are really chuffed.''
Mr McMahon, a former head of operations at National Savings, in Durham, caught the walking bug on a trip to the Lake District in his teens. He and his wife, Anne, have been on walking holidays throughout the world, including to Australia, the US and New Zealand.
Mr McMahon, a volunteer van driver for Durham's St Cuthbert's Hospice, said the win meant they had more money, so they are considering a week away in the autumn.
A spokeswoman for Ramblers Holidays said the company was marking its anniversary by giving two customers breaks at 1946 prices.
