TEAMS of young enthusiasts built an array of model bridges yesterday in a challenge contest to mark National Science Week.
They used paper cups, clothes pegs, lollipop sticks, straws, cardboard, paper and glue to produce a variety of structures in the competition at Barnard Castle.
Six pupils from Ingleton Primary School gained prizes for the best design and most imaginative creation with their model of a sturdy railway bridge over the River Tees.
In their team were Olivia Allinson, Oliver Pearse, Sarah Stephenson, Abigail Allan, Emily Campbell and Tilly Lanagan. With them were teacher Carole Jones and parent helper Julie Lanagan.
The 12-year-old Guy quadruplets - Emma, Laura, Kirsty and Becky - were in the Staindrop Comprehensive team, along with Edward Kirby, awarded the prize for the most interesting model - a high-level bridge over the River Amazon.
St Mary's Primary School, supervised by headteacher Liz Heffernan, took awards for best teamwork and most creative design. The Craftworks team's long-rail bridge was judged most realistic.
The contest was organised by Tony and Anne Noble of the Green Explorers group.
