A CHARITY shop was opened yesterday to provide much-needed income for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
BBC Radio Newcastle presenter Sue Sweeney cut the ribbon to open the shop in Front Street, Chester-le-Street.
The comedienne said: "Few of us will go through life without being affected by cancer in some way.
"Marie Curie nurses provide practical nursing care to people with cancer, in the comfort of their own homes, 365 days a year and at no charge.
"But they don't just look after the patient, they also provide much-needed support and comfort for the family during what is a difficult and stressful time."
The shop, one of the funding mainstays of the organisation in the area, has recently moved to its new premises.
Manager Susan Sellers said: "I hope I can help make it a huge success.
"I would personally like to ask the people in the area to support Marie Curie Cancer Care.
"Even small donations of clothing, accessories, books, CDs or unwanted gifts will be gratefully received and can help to make a real difference."
The charity yesterday appealed for more volunteers to come forward to help run the shop. Anyone who can spare a few hours is asked to ring the charity on (01793) 582500.
