CAMPAIGNERS from North Yorkshire are calling for tougher arms trade controls.

Staff from the Oxfam shop in Richmond are urging people to sign up to the Million Faces petition.

More than 750,000 people have already joined the campaign for an international arms trade treaty.

Campaigners Betty Clayton and John Silkstone say 1,000 people die everyday from the abuse of arms.

Ms Clayton said: "It is scandalous that so many people are dying every day due to a lack of controls on arms.

"We are calling on the UK Government to take a lead at the UN in pushing for an arms trade treaty.

"I am sure many people are not aware that while there are international treaties covering the international sales of everything from dinosaur bones to postage stamps, there is currently no treaty aimed at controlling the sales of weapons."

Ms Clayton is urging her local MP William Hague to join the campaign.

She said: "I would ask Mr Hague to use his position to call for an arms trade treaty and to add his own face to the Million Faces petition."

The UN will meet in New York in June to discuss the trade in small arms and light weapons.
