THE Angel of the North last night became the focus of a protest by animal rights activists against a multinational company's use of animal testing.

The campaigning group Uncaged projected the slogan "Procter and Gamble test on animals" across the wings of the Angel - seen by thousands of motorists passing by on the A1 Western Bypass at Gateshead.

Procter and Gamble is the world's largest consumer products company with an annual turnover of about £25.6bn.

Traditionally known for its soaps and detergents, it also produces products for hair care, cosmetics, perfumes, laundry care and pet food.

The international headquarters is in the US city of Cincinnati and its Global Business Centre is at Cobalt Park, North Tyneside.

Calling for a consumer boycott last night, Uncaged campaigns director Dan Lyons said: "P and G continues to test on animals for cosmetics and other products. The fact is that the vast majority of people are opposed to Procter and Gamble's animal cruelty, so our campaign is aimed at pushing at an open door really.

"In fact, we're providing an important service to the public because many people continue to unwittingly support cruelty by buying P and G products."

A P and G spokesman said last night: "P and G is committed to improving lives with high-quality products while safeguarding the health of our consumers.

"Sometimes, but only as a last resort, we must conduct research involving animals to ensure materials are safe and effective. We are passionate about continuing our progress in developing alternatives to research involving animals."
