CHANGES to what was once a grammar school are to play a key role in improving community facilities.
The Grammar School, in Wath, near Ripon, was created in 1691 and was closed in 1974. It is now used by a number of local groups.
Now a single storey extension will pave the way for alterations to provide a large meeting room.
The former school and adjoining school house are both Grade II-listed buildings and, while planning officers recommended refusal, members of Harrogate Borough Council Planning Committee voted unanimously to approve the project.
Councillor Chris Brown said the facility for community use would be very much welcomed in the village.
It also provides a venue for fund-raising events and meetings for village organisations.
