FOUR groups of young people are about to battle it out in the North Yorkshire Crimebeat finals - with prizes of up to £1,000 at stake.
The national Crimebeat scheme aims to reduce crime, the causes of crime and enhancing the quality of life within communities.
And the North Yorkshire finals will take place at Aldwark Manor, near Alne, York, later this week.
The finalists include BP4uth, a group formed by young people aged between six and 14 from the Baden Powell estate at Catterick Garrison.
They have worked to reduce bullying, graffiti and litter on the estate, as well as helping address the problems of isolation that many young people have.
The Three Tequilas, made up of former pupils at Bedale School, were inspired by a tragic road accident in which one of the members lost a sister.
They produce live theatre and associated workshops for young people across the county.
Protect Our Play Area is made up of pupils from Ingleby Greenhow CofE primary school, who returned from their summer holidays last year to find their play area had been trashed by youths.
They were challenged to come up with solutions and have created a scheme which has shown inspiring ideas.
Community safety officer PC Jim Martin said: "Crimebeat is a great initiative because it encourages young people to get involved in their local community and make a real difference.
"It also helps to develop their self-respect, individual potential and respect for their community."
