SCHOOLCHILDREN with learning difficulties have completed a catering course at Darlington College to help them adjust to student life.

For the past 20 weeks, year 11 pupils from Beaumont Hill Technology College have been learning how to bake, cook and prepare all manner of dishes. They achieved an AQA qualification.

Tutor Lesley Wilson said: "They have been a fantastic group who have worked well together and have always been eager to learn.

"We have covered everything from making soup, stir fry and pizzas to biscuits, puddings and cakes."

Many of the students are expected to study at Darlington College once they leave Beaumont Hill.

"For those who do, the transition from school to college will be a lot easier as they are used to the environment and already know the tutors," said Mrs Wilson. "Those who don't will be able to use new-found skills that should help them live life much more independently."
