HUNDREDS of people gave a tearful disabled boy a standing ovation after his pet dog won a prize at Crufts.
Chocolate labrador Yogi won the Kennel Club's Friends for Life trophy after judges learned of the bond he has formed with 12-year-old Daniel George, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Yogi has become Daniel's 24-hour guardian, helping him with everyday tasks such as undressing, opening doors and fetching the remote control. He is even trained to pull his duvet over him at night and to bark if Daniel is in trouble.
Tens of thousands of TV viewers watching the Crufts coverage on BBC2 voted for Daniel and Yogi to win.
Daniel, of Hebburn, South Tyneside, cried when he and Yogi were presented with the award.
The audience gave the pair a standing ovation.
Daniel's mother, Mary, 41, said: "Daniel was beside himself when he won. He just burst into tears, and so did I, he was so happy.
"There was not a dry eye in the house.
"Yogi is just brilliant with Daniel and they get on so well together. He has changed Daniel's life."
Daniel, who has a brother, David, 15, and a sister, Kelsa, nine, was diagnosed with the muscle-wasting condition when he was two. He can walk short distances, but needs an electric wheelchair to go further, and simple things such as taking his socks off are often difficult.
Yogi was trained by the Dogs for the Disabled charity.
