YOUNGSTERS have been going native in a rare way, on Teesside.
Pupils from Lingfield Primary School, Coulby Newham, helped Tees Forest and Middlesbrough Council staff plant two rare black poplars yesterday.
In ancient times, the tree was common all over Britain, but now it is estimated that only about 7,000 survive.
The trees are from cuttings, taken from a tree that fell over in Albert Park, Middlesbrough, four years ago.
Countryside officer Liz Langton said: "The black poplar has been extremely rare, and we are doing what we can to preserve it and increase its numbers. We plan to plant more of them in Stewart Park and Albert Park at a later date.''
The trees have been planted at the Lingfield Countryside Centre at Coulby Newham, near Middlesbrough.
