YOUNG artists in Darlington are being urged to draw attention to the dangers of playing in the sunshine.
Prizes are up for grabs in a poster competition run by Darlington Sun Safety Steering Group.
The contest will highlight the damage that the sun can cause to unprotected skin.
Councillor Chris McEwan, cabinet member for children's services, said: "Many parents protect their families from the sun when they are on holiday or at the beach but even at home the sun can be dangerous to unprotected skin."
Darlington Primary Care Trust (PCT) dermatologist Tim Cunliffe said: "Many skin growths are the result of exposure to strong sunshine.
"Our school nurses and health visitors tell us of the number of children who are getting burnt during the summer so we are trying to get the sun safety message into schools."
Youngsters have until April 28 to draw their winning design with the message Keeping Safe in the Sun.
Each school will put forward their best entries to the finals at Hummersknott School on May 9 to coincide with national Sun Awareness Week.
Durham County Cricket Club will present the prizes and organise a cricket match for the children. The steering group includes Darlington Borough Council, Darlington PCT and Sure Start.
