A COMMUNITY stalwart has been recognised for raising spirits on the Teesside estate she has lived on since it was built.
Anastasia Hall, known to everyone as Anas, had a 74th birthday surprise when she arrived at the Park End Community Centre, Middlesbrough, at the weekend.
She was greeted with a party including about 70 guests to witness the unveiling of a plaque recording her devotion to the area.
Mrs Hall was an active member of the residents' association and community council for many years and played a pivotal role in getting the centre built.
Community development worker Gillian Moore said: "Anas has been a pillar of this community for many years, and is known and respected by so many residents.
"They wanted to pay her this tribute, and it is nice that it all happened on her birthday.
"When she entered the room, she was speechless, but once she got over the shock, she recognised everyone and spoke to them all.
"She has lived in the area since it was built and has worked tirelessly to maintain the community spirit.
"All of her family were so proud to see Anas get a plaque unveiled in her honour."
