A SCHOOLTEACHER stepped out of the classroom to give a science and technology lesson in the Houses of Parliament.
Madeleine Walton, key stage four science co-ordinator at Woodham Community Technology College, in Newton Aycliffe, was principal speaker at a joint meeting of the science and technology select committees last month.
Mrs Walton was invited to speak on behalf of 21st Century science pilot schools - of which Woodham is one - by education bodies linked to the Nuffield Curriculum Centre.
She spoke to more than 40 MPs and peers about how teachers were acting on their calls to maintain pupils' enthusiasm for the subject.
Mrs Walton said schools were trying to encourage talented youngsters to study science and technology at university and to discuss controversial and ethical issues in lessons.
