A POWERBOAT championship is coming to the North-East for the first time.
The Powerboat Grand Prix will take place at South Shields, South Tyneside, over the weekend of July 22 and 23.
It has been organised as part of Newcastle-Gateshead Initiative's programme of events this year.
This is the eighth season for the world's largest offshore powerboat series and organisers are expecting more boats than ever.
Stella Hall, creative director at initiative, said: "It's quite a coup to bring this world-class sporting championship to North-East England.
"Free and accessible for all the family, this fast-paced, high-profile event has been planned to take place in close proximity to the shore, guaranteeing a spectacular view and exciting day out."
The event is being organised with South Tyneside Council, and more details of activities and events planned to take place in South Shields over the weekend of the grand prix will be announced soon.
