HISTORY enthusiasts can learn about searchlights and war memorials at two talks.

Durham historian David Butler will look at First World War memorials, and how to interpret information on them, in a talk at Durham's Clayport Library, Millennium Place, Claypath, on Sunday, starting at 2pm.

Tickets for the talk, called From Malton to Messines, Lanchester to Loos: Interpreting a World War One Memorial, cost £2 and should be booked in advance at the library on 0191-386 4003.

On Saturday, March 18, Geoffrey Berriman, president of the County Durham and Teesside branch of the British Red Cross, will give a talk about Second World War searchlights, called They Swept the Skies.

The talk is based on his book of the same name and covers the early wartime days of Searchlight Troops, the harsh conditions in which they lived and their primitive equipment.

Tickets for the talk, which starts at 2pm, should be booked in advance.

He will also cover the introduction of radar-controlled searchlights, the variety of uses they were put to, service overseas, and the almost wholly female Searchlight Regiment.

Tickets for the talk, which starts at 2pm, should be booked in advance.
