DALES residents are backing a plan to create a renewable energy centre in the region.

A taskforce set up to create jobs in Weardale, County Durham, after Lafarge Cement closed its Eastgate works in 2002, said last night that residents were enthusiastic about proposals to replace it with a privately-funded eco-village that combines energy development and research with educational facilities, tourist attractions and housing.

The centre would run on various forms of land-based renewable energy available in the UK and include a spa using natural hot water from underground

Residents raised six main points during consultation, including the complexity of the concept, potential traffic problems, and the impact on Eastgate village.

They said that benefits to local people should be prioritised.

John Hamilton, chairman of the Weardale Task Force, said the results were encouraging. He said: "It will be a sustainable community, renowned for its pioneering use of renewable energies, delivering business, educational and recreational opportunities."

He emphasised the importance of ensuring the project would generate sustainable employment for local people and opportunities for businesses.
