A FLORIST is appealing for help to catch a thief who stole a week's takings when his back was turned.

Billy Readman, owner of Pretty Petals, in West Road, Annfield Plain, near Stanley, thinks his cash box was stolen some time between 10.30am and 4.30pm on Monday.

It contained more than £730 and the theft has left the 65-year-old devastated.

He is urging people who may know who is responsible to tell the police.

Mr Readman said: "I am sick. I'll do anything to get my money back.

"I haven't got a clue who it could have been, or when it happened.

"It could have happened while I was out the back doing dishes.

"I trust everyone that comes into the shop. It is a real kick in the teeth."

Mr Readman used to work with people with learning difficulties at an adult education centre for Durham County Council.

He set out on his own three years ago, and does not even pay himself a wage because he is trying to build up the business.

Pretty Petals sells floral displays, gifts for christenings and weddings and ornaments, as well as coffee and biscuits.

PC Liam Padgett, who is investigating the theft, said: "It is the work of a sneak thief who appears to have gone in the shop when Billy has been distracted and taken the cash box.

"He takes very little money from the business and he is very upset about it. It is more devastating for him than it would be for other traders.

"He is so well-liked in the community, we hope people will be prompted to come forward.

"We need help from the public to help us catch the person responsible."
