A company that takes an innovative approach to recycling has received an award.

Recycling IT (Europe) Limited, which recycles computers, won the Environmental Award, sponsored by the Federation of Small Business, at the North-East Best New Business Awards.

The company, which started trading in the Tees Valley in August 2004, is based in the John Clarke Centre, Teesport Commerce Park, Middlesbrough.

It refurbishes and recycles computer equipment in compliance with the European waste electrical and electronic equipment directive.

The directive seeks to minimise the impact of electrical and electronic equipment on the environment.

The company, which has seen turnover increase by 500 per cent since it started under the leadership of managing director John Pettifer, recycles computer parts for use in other machines.

It also exports older machines to emerging countries and has even helped turn computer discs into table mats.
