A NEWLY-FORMED dog re-homing charity is appealing for loving owners for unwanted ex-racing dogs.
Greyhounds Galore was started earlier this year in a bid to relieve difficulties facing the racing breed.
Its committed volunteers have been helping dogs for more than 20 years, but have branched out with their own charity to focus solely on greyhounds.
Founder Pat Smith, who runs the charity in Newby Village, near Stokesley, said: "We take greyhounds from a variety of places, and work closely with some trainers and owners who do care what happens to the ex- racing dogs.
"We take greyhounds from the local dog pound, and they are usually very underweight, full of worms, fleas and very traumatised with the whole ordeal.
"We also take greyhounds from people who are unable to care for their pets any longer.
"This, of course, is when our work starts - calming them down, giving them a routine and, of course, lots and lots of love.
"These dogs make lovely pets and, contrary to what everyone says, they do not need miles every day, they like a short run, then back to their bed or settee for hours of sleep.
"They are excellent with children, and friendly affectionate dogs, generally.
"We are always looking for fosterers - maybe someone who cannot afford to have a dog, but would care for one for a couple of months, till we re-home them, or just someone willing to take in a second dog for a short time."
