A plan to develop much-needed low-cost village housing has been rejected by councillors - only nine days after the project had been approved.
On February 14, Harrogate Borough Council's full planning committee voted by 11 votes to two to approve a scheme for 13 homes at Rainton, near Ripon, including eight affordable homes.
But because that decision went against planning officers' advice, the planning sub-committee, had to reconsider the application on Thursday, and councillors voted by 12 votes to three to reject the scheme, on a site behind the Lamb Inn.
Rainton Parish Council chairman David Cornmell said: "It sounds a real shambles. Despite the scheme getting the backing of the planning committee and unanimous support from the parish council, it has now been turned down."
Villager Beckie Readman, 22, who has lived in Rainton all her life and is desperate for a home of her own, said prices in the village were way beyond her means.
With homes selling for £500,000, she said she did not stand a chance of getting on the property ladder without affordable homes.
"I am upset about the decision when our parish council knows what is best for the village," she said.
