THREE department store workers have clocked up an amazing 172 years service.

Don Raper, Alan Dandy and Maureen Carr have worked at Barkers in Northallerton, since they were teenagers.

Mr Raper, who is company chairman, joined in 1934 as a 13-year-old errand boy.

He then sold lino, carpets and matting before moving to the footwear department, where he met his wife, who kept his job for him during his time in the services.

Mr Dandy and Mrs Carr both joined in 1956 at the age of 15. Mr Dandy began as an errand boy before going into furniture and carpet fitting.

Mrs Carr spent time in various departments before moving on to shoes, fashion accessories and handbags.

Mr Raper said: "I have met a lot of lovely people, both as customers and staff."

Store owner Charles Barker said: "We are very lucky to have such a good team of people."
