YOUNG people from Derwentside are taking part in an international festival this summer.

Members of Stanley Woodcraft Folk will join 5,000 people from 70 countries as part of Global Village 2006, in July.

The 35 youngsters will discuss issues such as tackling poverty and promoting fair trade. They will also enjoy live music and listen to guest speakers.

The Woodcraft Folk is an educational movement for children and young people, from six to 19.

The group aims to develop self-confidence and organise activities based on equality, friendship, peace and co-operation.

Volunteer Sarah Grey said: "Imagine being a young person from Stanley, and going away for ten days to take part in global activities and meet people from different cultures for the experience of a lifetime.

"When I was younger, I went to two of these festivals. They gave me experiences of new cultures and societies, and showed me the world is a big place.

"These experiences encouraged me to do voluntary youth work, and then go on to university to study community and youth work.

"I hope the festival in Kent will have the same positive effect on their lives."

Stanley Woodcraft Folk meets every Tuesday, from 6.15pm to 7.45pm, in Tanfield Lea Activity Den, King Edward Street, Tanfield Lea, near Stanley.

New members and volunteers are always welcome to attend the metings and take part in the group's varied programme of activities.

Woodcraft Folk is setting up a new group in Durham, and anyone interested can call for information on 0191-370 9516 or 0783 797 1210.
