A NEW play area built following a fundraising effort by parents and teachers has already proved a hit with youngsters.
The play area, at Queen Mary's School, near Topcliffe, Thirsk, features a Wendy house and ride-on toys.
It cost £12,000 to build and was designed for pupils aged between three and seven.
Mary-Jane Foster, head of early years at the school, said the play area was built as part of a bid for a quality kitemark awarded by North Yorkshire County Council.
"I asked parents for their ideas and one of the main suggestions was an upgraded play area," said Mrs Foster.
"A fundraising committee was formed and there have been all sorts of events - a fashion show, barbecue on sports day and a quiz night, to name but a few.
"It has been the result of parents working with the school, towards the same goal, and is a real success story."
The area proved an instant hit with pupils. "They have so much fun," said Mrs Foster. "We are fortunate at Queen Mary's in having wonderful grounds and so much space. This is a superb addition and is ideal for extending their learning."
