SMOKERS in north Durham are being offered help to quit the habit with a new exercise programme that starts today.
The eight-week scheme takes place at the Brandon and Deerness Sure Start Centre, in Ushaw Moor, every Tuesday, between 9.30am and noon.
It is organised by Sure Start and supported by Durham and Chester-le-Street Primary Care Trust's (PCT) stopping smoking service.
The aim is help people quit cigarettes by offering them advice and nicotine replacement therapy where necessary.
The PCT's community staff nurse, Jennifer Peel, is co-ordinating the sessions.
She said: "Exercise is known to help reduce the cravings for nicotine, and this structured programme aims to help smokers give up for good. A group setting can make a huge difference, due to the support gained from others going through the same experience.
"The programme is suitable for beginners to exercise, and the class will work on general fitness, co-ordination and strength."
Advice on quitting smoking takes place from 9.30am to 10.30am followed by a moderate exercise class from 11am to noon. To find out more, ring 0191-373 4844.
