CHILDREN are to have a say in the running of a Middlesbrough band.
The six-year-old Teesside Wind Band has appointed two schoolchildren to its management committee, 12-year-old oboeist Sally Helyer, and 14-year-old trumpeter Max Wheatley, both pupils at Nunthorpe Secondary School.
The two youngsters, from Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough, have been part of the band, which has about 24 members, for two years.
Band president Peter Cook said the appointment will give the youngsters an insight into how a band operates and the problems that have to be faced.
Sally said: "I love playing with the band, and I am excited at the thought of getting involved with the decision-making."
She will sit alongside her dad, Colin, the band's librarian.
Musical director Keith Morley said youngsters like Sally and Max are the future lifeblood of the band.
